As Hong Kong enters the increasingly hot season, farmers brace for unpredictable rainfall and ideal conditions for pests and diseases. But thanks to several successful trials of new regenerative farming practices, they’re better prepared than ever to face the challenges ahead.
At Sangwoodgoon, preparations for the summer season are well underway. Winter melon is taking center stage this year, with most seeds saved from last season—a testament to the farm’s commitment to seed sovereignty and sustainability. Farmer Sze Chung is already seeing promising results: the plants are growing tall and lush, and the melons are yielding impressively large sizes.
We can’t wait to see even more fruits ripen in the weeks to come!

One of the highlights in the last few months is these cucumbers with over 3 weeks of extended harvest as opposed to a month, based on past experiences. Sze Chung expressed that adding chaser compost helped with fending off fruit flies and keeping the fruit in shape.

Eggplants—one of last year’s standout crops—proved remarkably resilient, delivering consistent harvests throughout the year despite fluctuating temperatures that typically challenge their growth. Now reaching the end of their cycle, these annuals are being retired, with their living roots intentionally left in the soil to help maintain structure and prevent erosion.
